Meme Coin Trading Guide

How to find and trade meme coins profitably while protecting yourself from the scams that cost traders millions every week.

What Are Meme Coins?

Meme coins are cryptocurrencies driven primarily by internet culture, community hype, and social media momentum rather than fundamental utility. From DOGE and SHIB to WIF and PEPE, meme coins have produced some of the largest percentage gains in crypto history; and an equally staggering number of total losses.

The meme coin market is high-risk, high-reward. In 2024, the Solana meme coin ecosystem alone generated hundreds of tokens daily via Pump.fun, with a small fraction producing 100x+ returns while the vast majority went to zero.

How to Evaluate a Meme Coin Before Buying

1. Check the contract for security flags

Before anything else, paste the contract address into a honeypot checker. If the sell tax is above 5%, if the contract is not verified, or if a blacklist function exists; skip it entirely. No narrative is worth a rug.

2. Verify liquidity is locked

Liquidity should be locked for at least 6-12 months via a verified locker (like Unicrypt or Team Finance). If liquidity is not locked, the developer can drain the pool at any time; this is a rug pull.

3. Check the holder distribution

If the top 10 wallets hold more than 30% of the supply, the token is vulnerable to whale dumps. Use Guava to check the top holder percentages in the token security report.

4. Look at the chart and volume

Is volume organic? Real buy and sell activity from multiple wallets? Or are there large wash-trading candles from a single address? Check the Guava trending scanner for legitimate volume signals.

5. Assess the community

A healthy meme coin has an active Telegram/Discord with real engagement (not just bot activity), legitimate Twitter posts, and ideally some viral content driving organic interest.

Meme Coin Entry Strategy

Early Entry (Highest Risk)

Entering within the first few minutes of launch. Potential for 10-100x but extremely high rug risk. Requires fast security checks and very small position sizes (0.5-1% of portfolio max).

Momentum Entry (Moderate Risk)

Entering after the first wave of hype and a confirmed security audit. Lower upside (2-10x) but significantly lower scam risk. Look for consolidation after initial pump.

Established Meme Coins (Lower Risk)

Coins with 3+ months of history, large liquidity (>$500K), and renounced contracts. Think DOGE, SHIB, PEPE, WIF. Volatility is still high but scam risk is minimal.

Universal Rule: Position Sizing

Never put more than 1-5% of your portfolio into any single meme coin. The winners can be huge, but assume every position could go to zero. Diversify across 5-10 coins.

When to Sell; Exit Signals

Most meme coin losses happen because traders hold too long. Having a pre-defined exit plan before entering is non-negotiable.

2x target hit

Sell 50% of your position at 2x to recover your initial investment. Let the rest ride risk-free.

Volume collapses

If daily volume drops more than 70% without a clear catalyst, smart money is likely exiting.

Top wallets start selling

Use Guava's wallet following feature to watch top holder wallets. If they dump, follow.

Narrative fades

If the coin's core meme or story stops trending on social media, the pump cycle is likely over.

Contract change or ownership transfer

Any change to the contract post-launch is a critical red flag; exit immediately.

The 5 Commandments of Meme Coin Trading

1Always check the contract before buying; no exceptions.
2Never invest more than you can afford to lose entirely.
3Take profit on the way up; never wait for the top.
4Ignore FOMO; if you missed a 10x, the next one is coming.
5Trust on-chain data, not Telegram hype.
